How to Turn a Bad Day Around – 5 Simple Ways!

How to Turn a Bad Day Around – 5 Simple Ways!

An early morning argument, a trashy comment from a colleague, an unexpected phone call from work, a cancelled flight or heavy traffic!

These are just a few things that can trigger a bad day and leave us feeling distressed.

I used to wake up with my heart thumbing and my mind racing about things that had happened the previous day.

Working on myself, I consciously devised 5 ways to transform the bad into good based on this fundamental principle;

Unhappy or happy, stressed or calm, envious or supportive, disappointed or motivated,

I choose which emotion to experience.

This is how.

1.WITNESS YOUR EMOTIONS

“The Owl is the wisest of all animals; The more it sees, the less it talks.” – African Proverb.

Very often, people react upon their first emotions.

Anger, detest, disappointment, insecurity.

They ACT before they THINK, making a mountain out of an anthill.

That is what the brain has been trained to do due to repetition.

The good news is we can reprogram it.

It is time to turn the tables around. Pause for 5 seconds and do the opposite.

THINK before you ACT.

When you pause, you become the observer. You witness the feelings that creep up.

 A colleague criticizes you.

Acknowledge the feelings that stirs up.

Insecurity? Anger? Envy?

Stop there.

THINK.

You are not going to feel insecure or waste your energy for being your genuine self.

Choose confidence instead.

You love yourself enough.

A potentially bad start of the day has been redirected because of that simple choice you made.

2.ACCEPT YOU CAN NOT CONTROL EVERYTHING

Stuck in traffic or caught a flat tire on your way to work?

You feel your body tense. You start swearing and are irritated by the hot Sun that shines beautifully in the blue sky.

Notice those feelings, but do not fuel them.

Remember, we want to turn the Bad into the New Good?

Unless teleportation is invented, there is nothing much you can do now.

You have no control over the traffic, the nail that was lying on the road nor over many other things that may happen to you.

Accept that fact and notice how your body relaxes.

The last thing you want is to stress over something you have no influence over.

For that reason, stay calm. Listen to your favourite songs on a CD or your favourite motivational speaker.

SING if you have to!

ACCEPTANCE IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS PEACE OF MIND.

3. MOVE YOUR BODY

It is widely known that the hormone Dopamine, which contributes to happiness, is released into the brain when you exercise.

Remember, the aim is to turn a potentially bad day into something positive.

We need something you can do almost instantly.

Short exercises such as a brisk walk during lunch break, pushups or even walking up and down a flight of stairs increases your heart rate and triggers a flow of hormonal changes in your body.

When you exert pressure onto your body in the form of exercise, energy is released.

Rather than stressing your mind, stress is physically transferred elsewhere.

This leaves space for clearer thinking and less rushed reactions.

The results are amazing.

Having a tough day at work? Move that body!

4. GET RID OF THAT LIMITING BELIEF

Monsters don’t live under your bed, they live in your head.

“There is no hope!”

“I am not good enough!”

“It’s never going to work out.”

Our beliefs accompany us during the day. They structure how we handle situations thrown at us and how we survive them.

Are your beliefs limiting you or empowering you?

A project you worked so hard for didn’t get accepted.

A limiting belief such as “I am not good enough” will guarantee a dark cloud over your head for the rest of the day.

Turning a bad day around involves fighting those limiting beliefs on a daily basis, continuously.

You must catch your limiting beliefs as they come and replace them with empowering ones.

“I am intelligent and have the ability to learn new skills.”

“Where there is a will, there is a way.”

 5. PAMPER YOURSELF

After you have become AWARE, ACCEPTED, TAKEN ACTION and have an EMPOWERING BELIEF, you can give yourself a treat at the end of the day.

Stop for some ice-cream, buy yourself a little present for being so confident, have a warm glass of chocolate drink and watch a comedy with your loved ones, or JUST DANCE!

Have all the fun you want in the privacy of your own home.

Tomorrow is a new day, with new opportunities and possibilities! A new start!

Be grateful.

Out of the many, these are 5 memorable things you can do almost instantly to turn a bad day around. Which methods do you use? Which have you found most helpful? I would love to hear your comments and opinions.
