Find Out How Much Power There Is In Only 5 Seconds
What was the first decision you had to make today?
I bet it was going back to bed this morning after the alarm went off! 5 more minutes turned into 10 more minutes which turned into 15 more minutes! Then you found yourself rushing to work or even missing the bus!
We NEVER FEEL LIKE DOING WHAT WE KNOW WE HAVE TO DO!... EVER!
You know you must wash the dishes but you find 1000 more important things to do. You end up with a huge pile of dirty pots and pans.
You know you should go to the gym but you are tired after work and don’t feel like it. This goes on for weeks. You are not losing the weight you had planned.
You want to volunteer to help a charity for a good cause but then you remind yourself that you are busy and have no time to lend. You end up not helping.
You see that disabled lady by the side of the road. As you approach her, you dig into your pocket for some change, then in dawns on you that it may be a trick. Overthinking, you pass by not giving any coins at all. You feel silly turning back.
Our brain always choses the easy way out and doesn’t particularly like doing new things or changing old habits. It likes to function on AUTOPILOT where not much effort or energy is required.
Scientists call it ACTIVATION ENERGY. The energy required to start a reaction. In humans, it is the kick-start that is needed to change autopilot into action mode.
For a boulder rock to roll down the mountain, it first has to be pushed. The smaller the boulder, the less energy input needed. The bigger the rock, the more activation energy is demanded.
It is that physical activation energy that gets the ball rolling in our lives.
It is that first push that makes the difference and starts off a reaction of favorable events.
It is the starting point towards change.
But how do we release activation energy?
According to Mel Robbins, it takes, 1,2,3,4,5 seconds before the brain literally talks us out of doing something new or different!
When an idea pops into your head, you must physically act upon it within 5 seconds!
If not, you start overthinking and will eventually resign from it.
This is how the 5 Second Rule works…
“I must wash that huge pile of dishes!”
Focus on the first step. STAND UP (within 5 seconds), WALK TOWARDS THE SINK. TURN THE TAP ON.
“I want to start a blog to share my passion!”
Don’t overthink. Just start. SWITCH ON YOUR LAPTOP AND FIND SERVICES THAT HELP CREATE BLOGS FOR FREE. START TAKING PICTURES OR WRITE DOWN A PLAN FOR A PHOTO SESSION. TAKE A PEN AND TAKE NOTES. It took me ages to write my first article. I gave myself so many excuses not to. One day I realized I wasn’t helping myself. That trigged me into action. I took a pen and wrote my first article “Turn Goals Into Results”. The rest is history.
“I want to volunteer for a charity event.”
If you can, DIAL THE NUMBER IMMEDEATELY and find out your options, if not, WRITE IT ON YOUR TO-DO LIST for tomorrow.
“I want to go to the gym instead of watching TV all evening.”
You need to turn up your activation energy. Within 5 seconds do something, anything! TAKE OUT YOU TRAINERS AND PUT THEM IN FRONT OF THE DOOR. TAKE YOUR GYM CLOTHES TO WORK! UNPLUG THE TV FROM THE MAINS OR JUST ASK SOMEBODY TO HIDE THE REMOTE CONTROL.
“I want to introduce myself to that professor standing over there.”
1,2,3,4,5! START WALKING TOWARDS HIM. Don’t think too much or you’ll convince yourself not to.
The 5 Second Rule is the amount of time needed to activate your energy and physically force you into action. Every day, I consciously make an effort to get things done. From simple things such as getting out of bed earlier to writing articles at 4am in the morning! It’s not easy. The harder the task the greater the force. But with time and repetition, it becomes the new you!
The trick is to physically do something within 5 seconds an idea pops into your head.
This allows you to always be one step ahead, building new habits in your brain.
These little actions you take within 5 seconds start to reshape your life. You set a new wire connection in your brain, teaching it favourable habits. More things get done, you become productive with this new lifestyle that makes your goals more achievable. Satisfaction guaranteed.
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” — Robert Collier
